Ph.D. Candidate Enrique Olivares-Pelayo awarded Guggenheim Foundation Emerging Scholar Award

A big kudos to Enrique Olivares-Pelayo who has just been awarded a 2026-2027 Guggenheim Foundation Emerging Scholar Award for his work “Running Raza: An Ethnography from Inside Arizona’s Prisons.”

 

The road to such monumental awards and distinctions is not paved with wins and recognition, but with the accumulated knowledge of how to navigate the potholes, loses, detours, and turn downs along the way. So keep doing your work, keep applying, and the distinctions and opportunities will meet you where you arrive. 

 

Congratulations, Enrique. And thank you to JP, Keith, Daniel, Indu, Ryan, and everyone else who has been, to continue the metaphor, in the passenger seat or part of the pit crew.

 

Now get back in the car, Enrique. You were awarded this for the promised journey, not the destination.
