PhD Candidate Sayanangshu Modak published in Dialogue Earth

May 29, 2026

On behalf of Dr. Margaret Wilder......

Congratulations to Sayanangshu Modak, PhD candidate, for his recent publication of an important public-facing piece which he shared with me and Andrea Gerlak on transboundary negotiations between India and Bangladesh over the Ganges and Teesta Rivers. I include his short intro which explains the current political context.

From Sayan:

In this piece, we analyze the outcome of the recent elections in West Bengal, my home state, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party secured a landslide victory and came to power for the very first time. In the article, we explore the possibilities that emerge for transboundary rivers flowing through the state from this newfound political alignment between the central and state governments.

We focus on two specific large rivers - the Ganges, whose treaty with Bangladesh is set to expire in December this year, and the Teesta River, for which the previous West Bengal government was consistently at odds with the Centre over a treaty with Bangladesh. We remain cautiously optimistic, though the barriers are structural.
