MDP affilated faculty Dr. Sapana Doshi recently began new research on stories of corruption in relation to urban real estate, land grabbing and redevelopment in Mumbai and Bangalore, India. This project, entitled "Corruption Plots, Imagined Publics: The Ethics of Space in the Millennial City", is supported by a grant from the American Council of Learned Societies.
MDP candidate Amanda Monroy has recently become Co-Chair of the Pima County City of Tucson Women's Commission. This is an advisory board to the City Council and the Board of Supervisors and focuses on improving the status of women in Tucson and working towards equality. Great work Amanda!
MDP candidate Devin Crim has recently started a new position as "Planner I" at the Santa Barbara County Planning Development- Energy and Minerals Division. This builds on his past position as a Planner at the San Xavier District on the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation. Congratulations!
The School of Geography and Development is very grateful for a generous gift from Professor Emeritus Bob Altschul and his wife Donna Altschul that will allow us to establish the Dieter and Donna Altschul scholarship for a graduate student in the school. Professor Altschul taught in the school from 1963 to 1995 with interests in physical geography and Africa. Donna Altschul has a Masters degree in geography also from this department with a focus in climatology.
Recent PhD Miriam Gay Antaki and SGD professor Diana Liverman published a paper in PNAS on Women in Climate in Science based on a survey of female authors of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The paper has recieved some media coverage. The paper is available here:
