Sonia Kaufman

My name is Sonia Kaufman, and I am a 3rd year PhD candidate in Geography with a minor in Public Health Policy. My interests center on urban health, environmental racism, municipal policy, and solid waste issues. My dissertation examines these themes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which is considered one of the 'dirtiest' cities in the U.S. 

Previous to my dissertation work, I researched and wrote about gender-based violence, geographies of fear, and health on college campuses. My master's thesis was published in 2023 and looked at women undergraduates' experiences of fear and physical (in)security at the UA. I am now in the process of co-writing a paper on universities' approaches to sexual violence and interpretations of Title IX.
